Solar power is a clean, renewable source of energy that generates electricity by converting sunlight into usable power. Unlike fossil fuels, solar energy production does not release harmful pollutants or greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. By embracing solar power, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and combat climate change, ensuring a healthier planet for future generations. One of the most appealing aspects of solar energy is its ability to save you money in the long run. By installing solar panels on your property, you can generate your own electricity and become less reliant on traditional utility companies. Over time, this leads to substantial savings on your electricity bills. With solar power, you can lock in low or even zero energy costs for decades, providing financial stability and predictability.
Investing in solar power not only helps you save money on energy bills but also increases the value of your property. Studies have consistently shown that homes equipped with solar panels have higher resale values. Potential buyers are attracted to the idea of an energy-efficient home with reduced operating costs, making solar-powered properties highly desirable in today's real estate market. The widespread adoption of solar power has a positive impact on the economy as well. The solar industry has experienced remarkable growth, creating numerous job opportunities across various sectors such as manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and research. By supporting solar energy, you contribute to local job creation, stimulate economic growth, and foster a sustainable future for your community.
Solar power plays a crucial role in achieving sustainable development goals. By transitioning to solar energy, we can reduce our reliance on finite fossil fuel resources and minimize the environmental damage associated with their extraction and use. Solar energy empowers individuals and communities to achieve energy independence. By generating electricity on-site, you are less susceptible to power outages caused by storms, grid failures, or other disruptions. Solar power gives you peace of mind, knowing that you have a reliable and self-sufficient energy source that will continue to operate even during unforeseen circumstances.

With the advancements in solar panel technology, the efficiency has increased to around 20%. This means that even on cloudy days, you can still generate a significant amount of clean energy. Vancouver Island actually has around 50% of all grid-tied solar panel systems in all of BC, so yes, solar panels are profitable. That being said; every home and/or business is subject to different shading and amount of roof and/or land space which is the biggest deciding factor.
In British Columbia, net metering is a program that allows residential and commercial solar panel system owners to receive credit for the excess electricity they generate. This credit can be used to offset your future electricity consumption from the grid. Under the net metering program, when your solar panels produce more electricity than you need at any given time, the excess electricity is fed back into the grid. BC Hydro measures the electricity you export to the grid and provides you with a credit based on the net difference between what you consume from the grid and what you generate.
These credits accumulate over time, typically on a monthly basis, and are carried forward to future electricity bills. When your solar panels generate less electricity than you consume (e.g., during the night or on cloudy days), you can use the credits to offset the cost of the electricity you draw from the grid. This way, you effectively "bank" your excess electricity and use it when needed, resulting in reduced or potentially even zero electricity bills.
Solar Panels typically last anywhere from 25-30 years or more. However, your solar panels may last even longer! Virtually no maintenance is required, as there are no moving parts. Being that we are on Vancouver Island, we get plentiful rain to wash away any dust or dirt and rarely get large amounts of snow that would need to be removed from panels. If you do live in a location that gets snowfall, there are options available to keep snow maintenance to a minimum.
